Classic movie night!

Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival announces special 2-movie spring event

Welcome to Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival’s 20th year! For the second time, we are presenting a pre-festival event in the spring—screenings of classic movies lovingly restored—in partnership with the Bologna-based Il Cinema Ritrovato Film Festival.

At 5 p.m. Saturday, March 14, we will screen the mesmerizing melodrama “Riso amaro” (“Bitter Rice”), a love story set in the rice fields of the Po Valley. Unforgettable characters populate the screen, and director Giuseppe De Santis turns a keen eye on the nature of this difficult work and the ways in which laborers are abused and exploited. Charleston audiences will appreciate some of the similarities between Italian rice cultivation and that of the Antebellum South.

At 7:30 p.m. that day, we will screen the beloved Vittorio De Sica film “Miracolo a Milano” (“Miracle in Milan”), a Neorealist fable in which a good-hearted orphan seeks to aid a ragtag group of poor people displaced by World War II and vulnerable to the abuse of cruel profiteers.

Both movies will screen at the Queen Street Playhouse, 20 Queen St.

During the intermission, Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival will offer a modest reception for members and patrons, to include wine and light bites. The Playhouse concessions also will be open for business.

The screenings are made possible by a collaboration between Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival and the Bologna-based Il Cinema Ritrovato Film Festival, which finds partners outside of Italy to screen restored classic movies.

Tickets are $20 per person for each of the films. The revenue we generate from this event will help us pay for the fall festival. Go to https://nuovocinemaitaliano.com for more information and to buy tickets. You can also purchase tickets at the box office before either screening.

Founded in 2006, Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival is the premier event of its kind in the United States, with 13 screenings, presentations by special guests from Italy and a variety of related events, all designed to promote Italian arts, language and culture.
