Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival is pleased to announce a special one-night-only screening of “Il Sorpasso,” a classic Italian movie directed by Dino Risi, and lovingly restored by the Cineteca di Bologna.
The event is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 11, at the Queen Street Playhouse, 20 Queen St., in historic Charleston, S.C. Doors open at 6 p.m.
The screening will be preceded by announcements about the film festival, which is revealing the 2023 poster and the complete schedule of 13 movies to be featured November 2-5 at the Queen Street Playhouse. Festival leaders also will unveil a new logo created by Gil Shuler Graphic Design for this next phase of the project, now in its 17th year.
“Il Sorpasso,” released in 1962, is among the best examples of commedia all’italiana, a style that became popular in the 1960s and ’70s and is characterized by irony, satire and farce, as well as allusions to social and economic issues of the period. The film is about an unlikely friendship that develops between a brash adventurer (Vittorio Gassman) and a modest law student (Jean-Louis Trintignant). Behind the wheel, the adventurer tends to tailgate and zoom past slower cars ahead.
Light refreshments will be served. Tickets are $20 each and available online and at the door.
Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival, established in 2006, has become the premiere red carpet event of its kind in the United States and a unique opportunity in Charleston to view a large selection of the best contemporary Italian movies. Each year, the festival brings filmmakers to town to discuss their work and interact with patrons and students.
The 2023 festival is set for November 2-5.
